China For the Hiker

China is a huge country full of incredible landscapes – what better way to explore them than on foot? Everyone knows it is the best way to get off the tourist trail and have more authentic experiences. For the avid rambler there are more and more challenging and unique trails springing up all over the country.

This quick itinerary, themed for those who love hiking, features some of our hiking highlights and gives you an idea of the places to visit in each destination:

China For the Hiker Itinerary

  • Days 1-2 : Depart UK and arrive in Shanghai.
  • Days 3-4 : Explore Shanghai - perhaps The Bund, the Old Town and the Pudong area appeal?
  • Days 5-6 : Head over to Huangshan. Long the inspiration for artists and poets, Huangshan is gaining in popularity for its excellent, challenging hiking trails, that wind among, around and over the rugged, granite peaks. The epitome of Chinese landscapes, there is no better way to explore the area, and find some inspiration of your own.
  • Days 7-8 : Travel up to Beijing and hike on the magnificent Great Wall. We'd also recommend exploring the Forbidden City and Summer Palace while you're here.
  • Days 9-10 : Continue on to Xian by bullet train or aeroplane. One sight not to miss is the Terracotta Warriors - you can also cycle around the old city walls and taste a local specialty - dumplings.
  • Days 11-13 : Pop over to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province. There is one big reason to come here - Pandas! You could also take a trip down to Emeishan (an overnight stay is recommended) for a fascinating culture fix.
  • Days 14-16 : And on to the beautiful karst landscapes of Guilin - a Li River cruise is a must do. Go hiking on the spectacular rice terraces of Longji.
  • Days 17-19 : Wind up in Hong Kong where there is much to explore including Victoria Peak and Lantau Island. Of the many hiking trails, the Dragon's Back is the one we would recommend most highly.
  • Day 20 : Depart Hong Kong for UK.
