India For The Foodie

Food is a gateway into the culture of a nation, and India, where every state has its own style of cooking, spicing and ingredients, this is particular poignant. For the adventurous eater who’ll nosh on anything there are more than enough exciting delicacies to keep you taste buds tingling for days.

This quick itinerary, themed for those who love their food, features some of our culinary highlights and gives you an idea of the places to visit in each destination:

India For The Foodie Itinerary

  • Days 1-2 : Depart UK and arrive in Delhi.
  • Days 3-4 : Explore the hustle and bustle of Delhi - we think the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Lodi Gardens are must sees. For the foodie, try a wazwan, a huge multi-course meal of deliciousness.
  • Days 5-6 : Travel down to Agra, where the Taj Mahal is the star of the show! Agra Fort and Fatephur Sikri are also wonderful sights.
  • Days 7-8 : Complete the Golden Triangle by continuing to Jaipur - which also happens to be the perfect place to take a cooking class! We recommend at least seeing the Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal while you are here as well.
  • Days 9-10 : Hop over to Jodhpur, perhaps by train. Climb up to the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort and wander the streets on a delicious food tour, focused on the cuisine of Rajasthan.
  • Days 11-12 : Finally arrive in Udaipur, where you can explore lakes and palaces. A foodie treat here is to take a class focused on preparing Thali, a traditional Rajasthani dish.
  • Day 13 : Depart Udaipur for UK.

Sample Wazwan, Delhi
Wazwan, a huge, multi-course meal, is a tradition of Kashmiri cuisine, but Delhi also does it well. The preparation of each dish is considered an art – you’ll sit down to a spread of delicious, often spicy dishes, all crying out for you to nibble on. Dishes include many exotic spices, including aniseed, turmeric and asafoetida.

Cooking Class, Jaipur
Taking a cooking class in Jaipur, you’ll learn the tips and secrets needed to prepare the perfect curry. You can choose to specialise in the flavours of any region of India from Rajasthan to Kerala, working under the guidance of a chef who will help you to prepare a range of delicious treats.

Food Tour, Jodhpur
A food tour not only gives you the opportunity to try out the food venues that your fellow travellers wouldn’t usual find – the ones that the locals frequent – but it also gives you a more authentic view of the city. Wrap your taste buds around a wide range of street food.

Prepare Thali, Udaipur
Thali is the traditional Rajasthani dish that just keeps giving. Served up on a big platter, the multiple dishes offer a range of different flavours, textures and colours. Learn to create this masterpiece of eating in a cooking class. Primarily vegetarian, you’ll pick up tips on how to combine sweets, ghee and spices.
