Japan For The Active

We all like to travel differently. Whilst some go for slow and easy, many like to be more dynamic, making the most of the huge variety that Japan has to offer. Land-based or sea-based, many an interest can be indulged, you just have to choose which ones inspire you most.

This quick itinerary, themed for those who love hiking, features some of our hiking highlights and gives you an idea of the places to visit in each destination:

Japan For The Active Itinerary

  • Days 1-2 : Depart UK and arrive in Tokyo.
  • Days 3-5 : Explore the incredible city of Tokyo. Why not visit Senso-ji, ascend the Tokyo Skytree and glimpse the Imperial Palace.
  • Days 6-8 : Hop on the bullet train to Nagano, the gateway to the Japanese Alps. Whilst we strongly recommend visiting the snow monkeys and experiencing an onsen, for someone looking to be active, this is the perfect place to go hiking.
  • Days 9-11 : Head down to Hiroshima. Visiting the Peace Memorial Park here is a must, but head on over to the island of Miyajima for some exciting sea kayaking!
  • Days 12-13 : Embark on the Shimanami Kaido, one of the world's best cycle routes.
  • Days 14-17 : Pop to Kyoto, where are well as a true taste of Japanese culture with plenty of temples and a wander through the Geisha district of Gion, you can also take part in a Kendo class.

Highlights

These highlights have been specially picked for this themed itinerary:

Hiking in the Japanese Alps
Whatever season you visit, the Japanese Alps are a spectacular place to be and, of course, the very best way to really explore is on foot. An area of mountains, rivers and forest, it is criss-crossed with excellent hiking trails.

Sea Kayaking, Miyajima
The holy island of Miyajima sits in the Seto Inland Sea, the lofty Mt Misen towering over the waters. See the island from a different angle with an energetic sea kayaking around it, making the most of the calm waters and beautiful views.

Shimanami Kaido
A 70 kilometre cycle route that follows the Nishiseto Expressway as it skips it’s way, via a series of spectacular suspension bridges, across the Geiyo islands of the Seto Inland Sea, the Shimanami Kaido is spectacular. Crossing areas of outstanding natural beauty, there are 14 bike hire terminals along the route, so you can do as much or little as you like.

Kendo Lesson, Kyoto
Kendo is derived from the ancient practice of swordsmanship and uses bamboo swords (shinai) and plenty of body armour (bogu). A class in this exciting and physical martial art will teach you the basic moves as well as some of the philosophy that are taught alongside them.
