Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer: 4 Night Yangtze River Cruise

For the most luxurious intimate experience on the Yangtze, cruise China's most famous river on the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer. With space for just 124 passengers, and a crew to passenger ratio of 1:1, the Yangzi Explorer sets new Yangtze cruise standards - relax in your spacious cabin or suite with its floor to ceiling windows and en suite bathroom as you watch the scenery pass by from your private balcony. Dining is a la carte and there is a luxury spa, an observation deck, theatre, library and fitness facilities to be enjoyed. Already the most elegant ship on the river, the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer has been transformed for 2017, giving each of the cabins and suites an even more deluxe look and feel. You'll also explore history-steeped cities and towns, ancient temples and scenic gorges along Asia’s longest river. The immersive, cultural on board experience includes calligraphy masterclasses, captivating talks about Chinese history, the all-important tea ceremony and dumpling making classes.

Cruising along the Yangtze is one of China's highlights, so don't miss it - it's easy to add this cruise into your perfect China itinerary.

Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer: 4 Night Yangtze River Cruise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrive in Yichang. Board the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer and settle into your beautiful cabin - complete with floor to ceiling windows and a balcony, as the ship casts off heading upstream. This evening, watch a documentary on the Three Gorges Dam Project in your cabin.
  • Day 2 : Consider rising early to take part in some traditional Chinese exercise on deck, before tucking into the buffet breakfast. Shortly after, the boat will enter the first of the Three Gorges, Xiling - sit back and enjoy the views in comfort, or join the optional 'Tribe of Three Gorges' tour (at an additional cost). After lunch on the ship visit the Three Gorges Project Dam Site and Exhibition Centre. Fully completed in 2015, the dam spans 1.2 miles and is 180 metres tall, and is the world's largest and most expensive engineering project. As controversial as the project has been, it is still a breathtaking sight. Later, nibble on afternoon tea and join one of a number of activities, including a Chinese Medicine demonstration. This evening the ship's captain will host a reception followed by an a la carte dinner and karaoke.
  • Day 3 : Enjoy breakfast before reaching the Shennong Stream. Here, onboard a local sampan (longboat) poled by a Tujia boatman, you will explore this spectacular riverine gorge. Pop back onboard the ship for lunch and sit back and enjoy the views as the ship passes through the Wu Gorge. There will then be a Chinese calligraphy demonstration, or an optional tour to the White Emperor City (at an additional cost) followed by afternoon tea. Tonight, sit down to an a la carte dinner and a variety show.
  • Day 4 : Start the day with Chinese exercise and a tasty buffet breakfast. This morning there will be a shore excursion to Fengdu - an old river town, explore the 'Ghost City', a collection of shrines, temples and monasteries that celebrates the afterlife. After lunch join a tour of the ship's wheelhouse and an arts & crafts presentation. This evening, learn to make dumplings with the chef before enjoying the 'Taste of China' dinner.
  • Day 5 : Savour the buffet breakfast before arriving in Chongqing. Chongqing has long been the gateway to the Yangtze River - a huge city of 33 million people that has grown out of the profits of trade on the river. Disembark the ship at around 9am.
