Once Sri Lanka's hippy hangout, Hikkaduwa's popularity turned bad when it bought a load of problems such as beach erosion and uncontrolled development to town. The 2004 tsunami, though, both literally and figuratively wiped the slate clean, and since then the town has slowly rebuilt itself and managed to tap back into its original charm. With a good range of hotels, restaurants and shops, Hikkaduwa is a lively place to hang out, its accommodation spread along the palm-fringed beachfront - the beaches are better the further out of town you get. Surfing, diving and snorkelling are all big activities available here - perfect for those who like to intersperse sprawled on the beach time with something that involves movement, and their is a turtle hatchery just outside the town.
