Laos

Vang Vieng

The town of Vang Vieng stands halfway between Luang Prabang and Vientiane amongst some of Laos’ most magnificent scenery. Here the Nam Song River winds languidly through a scene of emerald paddy fields and forest wrapped karst peaks, creating the perfect place to soak up the views or to take part in a plethora of outdoor activities.

What to see

Caves

Caves

The limestone karst outcrops around Vang Vieng are riddled with caves and caverns, many of which feature lagoons, shrines and impressive stalagmites and stalactites. There is a steep climb up to Tham Phu Kham, a cave sacred to the Laos, you are rewarded by being able to take a refreshing dip in the green-blue waters of it’s lagoon. Tham Song, or Elephant Cave, named for a pachyderm-shaped stalagmite, is home to Buddha images and a Buddha ‘footprint’ whilst the cavernous Tham Jang was used as a bunker to hide the local villagers from marauding Chinese in the 19th century. There are plenty more fascinating caves to explore, just ask your guide to recommend their favourites.

Outdoor activities

Outdoor activities

Vang Vieng has set itself up as Laos’ adventure capital, offering a vast range of both relaxed and more adrenaline-fueled activities set in the gorgeous landscapes around the town. Activities on the Nam Song River include tubing, kayaking and rafting whilst hiking or cycling through the countryside is a more leisurely way to explore – ask you guide to take you to one of the local minority villages or to Kaeng Yui Waterfall. Finally, for those really up for a challenge, the sheer number of karst peaks mean that rocking climbing is also a popular past time here.
