Once a powerful capital of an independent kingdom, Patan, also known as Lilitpur (City of Beauty), has now been all but engulfed by Kathmandu - it is just the Bagmati River that separates them. The oldest city in the valley, Patan has a reputation for being a hub of artisans and craftspeople which gives it a more sophisticated vibe, and makes it an excellent place to purchase souvenirs. Patan's Durbar Square follows the same layout as Kathmandu's but is on a smaller scale, It is considered to have the best collection of architecture in Nepal. Head to the fascinating Patan Museum where, in a former palace of the Malla Kings, you can view the traditional sacred arts of Nepal. This includes cast bronze and repousse. You can also wander over into Old Patan to visit the Ashok Stupa and wander past the magnificent 15th century Golden Temple which has some incredible decoration and bronze statues. Like Kathmandu, Patan's Durbar Square provides excellent people viewing opportunities and a vibrant atmosphere - it is a wonderful place to spend the day.
