Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s premier beach resort, occupies a headland jutting out into a bay dotted with beach-fringed tropical islands. Whilst you wouldn’t class Sihanoukville as a tropical paradise, it’s still easy to find a stretch of palm-tree-shaded white sands to yourself if you venture a little out of town. Just 4 hours by road from Phnom Penh, while away a couple of days here exploring undeveloped islands, relaxing on the beach and soaking up the laidback atmosphere.

What to see

Beaches

Beaches

Whilst Sihanoukville is a popular resort, the beaches here are nowhere near as developed as, say, Thailand – you’ll always be able to find a spot for your towel somewhere. Ochheuteal Beach is the longest but also the busiest stretch with plenty of bars and restaurants lining the front. Serendipity Beach, connected with Ochheuteal, is known as the party beach and is particularly popular with backpackers. Otres Beach, separated from the others by a headland, is generally a more relaxed place to kick back and also offers a whole range of watersports including windsurfing, paddle boarding and sea kayaking.

Islands

Sihanoukville’s sprinkling of islands offer opportunities for both sunny day trips and idyllic overnight stays. Leisurely cruises amongst these beautiful islands can include swimming, snorkelling and relaxing on beautiful beaches – the perfect way to explore and enjoy the beautiful turquoise water closer to Sihanoukville. Further afield Koh Rong, 2 hours 30 minutes from the mainland, boast white sand beaches and jungle trekking, close neighbour Koh Rong Sanloem is the place for utter relaxation whilst Koh Tang is a mecca for divers. There is no better way to round off your Southeast Asia adventure than a stay on one of these paradise islands.
