On a high altitude plateau at the edge of Sri Lanka’s hill country, the Horton Plains National Park encompasses a unique and fascinating eco-system of pristine cloudforest, grassland and rocky outcrops. Interspersed with wispy waterfalls and hazy lakes, this national park has plenty of good, easy hiking but is best known as one of the island’s best places for bird spotting, especially native species. Other potential spots include leopards, bear-faced monkeys and sambar deer. The highlands end dramatically at World’s End where sheer cliffs plummet 800 metres to the lowlands below, giving spectacular views towards to south coast.
