These highlights have been specially picked for this themed itinerary:
Hiking in the Japanese Alps
Whatever season you visit, the Japanese Alps are a spectacular place to be and, of course, the very best way to really explore is on foot. An area of mountains, rivers and forest, it is criss-crossed with excellent hiking trails.
Sea Kayaking, Miyajima
The holy island of Miyajima sits in the Seto Inland Sea, the lofty Mt Misen towering over the waters. See the island from a different angle with an energetic sea kayaking around it, making the most of the calm waters and beautiful views.
Shimanami Kaido
A 70 kilometre cycle route that follows the Nishiseto Expressway as it skips it’s way, via a series of spectacular suspension bridges, across the Geiyo islands of the Seto Inland Sea, the Shimanami Kaido is spectacular. Crossing areas of outstanding natural beauty, there are 14 bike hire terminals along the route, so you can do as much or little as you like.
Kendo Lesson, Kyoto
Kendo is derived from the ancient practice of swordsmanship and uses bamboo swords (shinai) and plenty of body armour (bogu). A class in this exciting and physical martial art will teach you the basic moves as well as some of the philosophy that are taught alongside them.
